SAVIORS THE SUMMONERS OF YEVON "The summoners are practitioners of a sacred art, sworn to
protect the people of Yevon." - Monk; Temple of Yevon, Besaid
I doubt there is a higher calling in Spira than to become a summoner of Yevon. Sure, it's a pretty important job being a Maester, but can a Maester bring an end to Sin? In the eyes of the people, the shadowy figures at the top of the religious tier are not nearly as close or believable as the summoners who travel through their villages and soothe the souls of their dead. As poster children for Yevon, the summoners are bowed by an immense weight. Many will fail, but the glory of the undertaking commands respect. What more can you give to someone who is on a journey to die for the greater good? The summoners stand in the limelight, their lives lived in the public eye. I couldn't help but wonder what it must have been like, to smile in the face of your own death, to take each step knowing that it brings you closer to the end of your own life. What does that take? Immense courage? An insatiable thirst for attention? Complete selflessness? The motivations behind becoming a summoner fascinate me. I do believe, however, that the High Summoners were those who were true champions of their people—those whose dedication to their cause stemmed not from personal reasons, but for the good of all, whether this epiphany occurred from the moment they set forth or in their last dying breaths.
